Giant Killing

Reading have beaten opponents from Division 1 (before 1992) and the Premier League in Cup competitions on 29 occasions. These are denoted in the season records by a 1 or P superscript, respectively. In the list below the number in square brackets gives the difference in division level. This makes the win over Wolves as a Fourth Division team in 1978-79 statistically the best performance, overcoming a three division gap. The golden age of Reading giant-killing was in the years before the First World War when, as a Southern League side, they beat First Division opposition on four occasions. Also notable is the Simod Cup winning run, which included five top division scalps (including the penalties win over Coventry).

Reading have lost to non-league opposition in the FA Cup six times since joining the Football League in 1920. Again the number in square brackets gives the difference in division level (which is negative in this case). This makes the defeat by Bishop's Stortford - from the Isthmian League Premier Division, three levels below the old Third Division - the most humiliating. It is also the only home defeat. The heaviest defeat against non-league opposition was in the Associate Members' Cup to Barnet.
