<< Season 1895-96 >>

Reading voted to allow professional players in May 1895, thereby allowing them to compete on more equal terms with teams like Millwall, Luton and Southampton. The measure met with some opposition from die-hard amateurs, who formed a breakaway Reading Amateurs club. The club also became a limited liability company under the chairmanship of J.B. Messer in August of the same year.
