<< Season 1902-03 >>

Reading finished Southern League runners-up to Southampton. 1902 also saw the appointment of Harry Matthews as team manager, a role he was to continue until 1920. Early managers were little more than trainers, team selection being in the hands of the board, however Matthews' record of Southern League Division One runners-up three times and Division Two champions once bears comparison with some of his successors.
