<< Season 1911-12 >>

Newspaper report The 1911-12 season saw the arrival of one of Reading's all-time great attacking partnerships, in Joe Bailey and Allen Foster. Bailey scored 82 goals in a career that continued into the Football League era, while Foster scored 73 before being killed in the First World War. Once again, Reading were meeting top flight opponents in the FA Cup. The previous season's First Division runners-up, Aston Villa, were beaten in a replay by a Foster volley (see report, right). It was a measure of the club's improving financial situation that they were able to turn down a £750 offer for Foster from Villa. Next up were the reigning Champions, Manchester United, who were held in front of a record 24,000 Elm Park crowd, before going through in a replay.
