<< Season 1940-41 >>

The War years were to prove among Reading's most successful, with manager Joe Edelston helping make the club a centre of the local community. A number of high-profile guest players, playing alongside the likes of Tony MacPhee and Maurice Edelston, proved an added attraction. In 1940-41, Reading scored 115 goals in all competitions, with MacPhee getting 45 (30 in the League, 15 in cup competitions). However the greatest achievement was winning the London Cup, seeing off the likes of Arsenal in the group stage, before going on to beat Brentford 3-2 in the final at Stamford Bridge.

Note The main table does not balance because it includes games played against teams from the War League North. The leagues were ranked by goal average due to the differing numbers of games played. A number of clubs also participated in a second tournament, the results from which were also included in the main table. Due to a dispute between the clubs, Brighton and Watford played a title decider, with Brighton coming out on top.
