<< Season 1948-49 >>

Reading finished as runners-up to run-away champions Swansea. The season saw the departure of one goal scoring legend and the arrival of another. Tony MacPhee retired to concentrate on coaching, and his place in the team was taken by Ron Blackman. He had signed from Gosport a couple of years previously, but his chances had been limited before MacPhee's departure. However he took his opportunity by scoring a hat-trick in his first game as MacPhee's replacement.
