Reading 'A' (third team, largely made up of youth players) competed in the Hampshire League from 1948 to 1968. In their first season they were champions of Division 3 East. Regulars in the team were Jimmy Hill and a very young Johnny Brooks. They were Division 2 runners-up to Portsmouth 'A' in 1950-51, but gained promotion to the top division by winning the Division 2 championship the following season. The same season they completed a double by winning the Russell Coates Cup. Their best performance in Division 1 was in finishing runners-up to Newport (Isle of Wight) in 1953-54. This was followed by a period of decline, halted by a Division 3 championship in 1958-59.
The 'A' team also won the Berks and Bucks Benevolent Cup in 1940-41.
