Hungerford Town were founded as long ago as 1886 and participated in local leagues until 1958 when they joined the Hellenic League Premier Division. They were relegated to Division 1 in 1964-65, being promoted back as champions in 1970-71. They remained in the Premier Division until 1978 when they transferred to the Isthmian League Division 2. After a reorganisation in 2002 they were effectively relegated and they rejoined the Hellenic League the following season.

Hungerford have twice reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase. In 1979-80 they went out to Guisborough Town 3-5 on aggregate, and in 1988-89 they lost 1-6 on aggregate to Sudbury Town. In 1979-80 they reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing 1-3 at Slough Town. They also won the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup in 1981-82 and were runners-up on three other occasions.
