Manchester United >>

Reading's encounters with Manchester United date back as far as 1896 when the old Newton Heath club drew 2-2 in a friendly at the Caversham Cricket Ground. They have also been regular FA Cup opponents, with Reading winning on just one occasion, at the third attempt in 1927. A United team including the likes of Best, Charlton and Law were also narrow winners in the Watney Cup in 1970.

Perhaps the most important connection between the clubs was Matt Busby, who was a popular guest player for Reading during the Second World War. After the war he was offered the position of Assistant Manager to Joe Edelston, but received a better offer to be manager of United. The rest is history.
