Other Reading Teams

The FA Cup was initially very much a Home Counties competition, so it is not surprising that teams from in and around Berkshire feature prominently in its early history. For example, Marlow and Maidenhead met in the First Round in 1871 and have appeared in virtually every competition since. Of the current League teams, Reading and Notts County were the first to enter in 1877, however Reading were not even the first team from Reading to enter. That honour belongs to Reading Hornets, who first entered in the previous season. The distinction between Hornets and Reading was always blurred: they shared many of the same players and played on the same ground. However after their heavy defeat at Maidenhead in 1877 the Hornets decided to disband and join forces with Reading.

In the 1880s three further Reading teams, Reading Abbey, Reading Minster and South Reading, all made an appearance in the competition. Indeed, South Reading played Reading in 1883-84. Reading Abbey and Reading Minster played their games at King's Meadow, while South Reading played at Whitley Park Farm (the current Cintra Park).

When Reading adopted professionalism in 1895 a number of die-hard amateurs formed a break-away Reading Amateurs club. They competed in the FA Cup qualifying rounds between 1896 and 1923, and won the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup in 1904-05 and 1905-06.

Other Reading teams to compete in the FA Cup qualifying rounds are Reading Ramblers (1898-1900), Reading United (1919-21), British Working Men's Institute, Reading (1924-28), the original Biscuitmen, Huntley and Palmer's (1947-70), and the town's current second team, Reading Town (since 1997).

Reading Town play in Scours Lane, between the railway and the Thames. They were originally Reading Garages, but changed their name to ITS Reading Town in 1988 on joining the Chiltonian League, and then to Reading Town in 1991. They were Chiltonian League Champions in 1994-95 (a good year), gaining promotion to the Combined Counties League.
