Reading were drawn to play Maidstone United in the first round in 1992-93, but received a bye when the Kent club went bankrupt. Reading have been drawn against Peterborough on seven occasions, against Watford on six, against Oxford on five, and against Gillingham on four. They played Peterborough in three successive seasons between 1997-98 and 1999-2000, beating them on all three occasions.

Reading's best performance in the League Cup has been to reach the quarter finals on two occasions. In 1995-96 they went down 2-1 to Leeds. Jimmy Quinn put Reading ahead but they could not hold on. The game was notable as being keeper Eric Nixon's only Reading appearance on loan from Tranmere. In 1997-98, having gained revenge by winning 3-2 at Leeds, they went out to a controversial goal against Middlesbrough - the referee seemed to have given a free kick to Reading late on, but as the teams lined up he indicated that it was a Boro kick. They took it quickly, catching Reading out of position to score.

The League Cup has always had five rounds, a semi-final and a final, so the summary of seasons can easily be used to compare Reading's performances over the years. In the early years, when not all the top teams entered, they received byes to the second round in 1960-61 and 1964-65. In later years they have occasionally been exempt until the second round due to their League position.
