1896 saw Reading move to the new Elm Park ground from the Caversham Cricket Ground. The first league game of the season was an 8-3 thrashing of Royal Ordnance Factories, a result that was later stricken from the record when their opponents resigned from the league. This was followed by a 1-0 win over Northfleet in the first League game at Elm Park.
