<< Season 1946-47 >>

The resumption of the Football League after the Second World War saw Reading in better shape than many of their rivals. Their first home game of the season saw them thump Crystal Palace by a club record score of 10-2 and they followed it up three days later by beating Southend 7-2. Tony McPhee scored four against Palace and three against Southend, while Maurice Edelston got three in each match. Incidentally, the fixture list for the 1946-47 season was the same as that for the abandoned 1939-40 season, when Reading had also won both of these matches, 5-0 and 1-0 respectively. However the momentum was not maintained and Reading trailed off to 9th place.
