The 1894-95 season saw Reading become founder members of the Southern League Division 1 along with such old friends as Swindon, Southampton, Millwall and Luton. The first game finished in a 4-3 win at Swindon thanks to a hat-trick from Jimmy Stewart. Reading also reached the quarter final of the FA Amateur Cup in their last entry into the tournament before turning professional, losing 5-2 to South Bank.
